Day by day

Day 1. Drive to Sirimon gate, about 4 hours from Nairobi. Walk to Old Moses camp at about 3,300 m.

Day 2. Walk across the moorland to Liki North for an acclimatisation day.

Day 3. Continue up the Mackinder Valley to Shipton's camp at about 4,200 m.

Day 4. Start the circuit around the west side of the peaks, crossing high passes to camp near Two Tarn or Mackinder Camp.

Day 5. Pre dawn climb to Point Lenana at 4,985 m, then descend the east side past Hall Tarns to Minto camp.

Day 6. Walk down the Chogoria route above the Gorges Valley to the roadhead camp.

Day 7. Descend through forest to Chogoria gate and drive back to Nairobi.

Do I need climbing skills?

No ropes are needed. Some high passes involve scree and boulders, so good fitness matters.

How cold does it get?

Below freezing at night above 4,000 m. Bring a warm sleeping bag and layers.

What about altitude sickness?

The extra days help. Your guide watches for symptoms and will descend with you if needed.

When is the best season?

January to March and late June to October.

Can I end at a safari?

Yes. Ol Pejeta or Samburu link well after the descent and are priced on request.

How does it compare to Kilimanjaro?

Mount Kenya is quieter with more varied scenery. Point Lenana is lower than Kilimanjaro, but the circuit is rougher underfoot.
