This mount elgon hike starts in Kitale and climbs to Koitoboss Peak, a flat topped crag on the crater rim at about 4,187 m. Lujui Kenya Travels adds the caves near Chorlim gate on the first afternoon.

Day 1. Pickup in Kitale and drive to Chorlim gate, about 1 hour. Afternoon walk to Kitum and Makingeny caves with your ranger. Night at the park bandas or campsite.

Day 2. Early drive up the forest road to the road head on the moorland. Hike to Koitoboss Peak, about 4 to 5 hours up, with views into the caldera. Walk back down and return to camp.

Day 3. Short morning walk at Endebess Bluff or the Elephant Platform viewpoint, then drive back to Kitale by early afternoon.

How hard is the climb to Koitoboss?

Moderate. The summit day is long and at altitude, but the path is gentle next to Mount Kenya. Good fitness matters more than technical skill.

When is the best season?

The drier spells from December to March and June to August. Heavy rain can make the upper road impassable.

Will I see elephants in the caves?

Elephants walk into Kitum Cave to lick salt, mostly at night. Daytime sightings are rare, but tusk marks on the walls are easy to spot.

How do I get to Kitale?

About 7 to 8 hours by road from Nairobi. Flying to Eldoret and driving about 1.5 hours is quicker.

Can children join?

Teenagers who hike can. Younger children usually stick to the caves and the lower forest walks.

How does mount elgon national park compare to Mount Kenya?

Elgon is lower, quieter and cheaper, with far fewer hikers. Mount Kenya is higher, busier and better known.
