Morning. Pickup at 6 am. Drive down the escarpment to Longonot gate. Climb the steep path to the crater rim with your guide.

Midday. Walk the full crater rim loop to the summit at 2,776 m. Snack break with views over Lake Naivasha.

Afternoon. Descend to the gate. Late lunch in Naivasha town or a packed lunch at the gate.

Evening. Drive back to Nairobi, arriving around 5 pm.

How hard is the Longonot hike?

Moderate to hard. The climb to the rim is steep and dusty. The full hike is about 13 km and takes 4 to 6 hours.

Do I have to do the full rim?

No. You can climb to the rim and come back down. The full loop is for those with the energy.

What should I wear?

Good hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and a light jacket. Carry at least two litres of water.

Can children hike Longonot?

Active children around 10 and older usually manage the rim. Younger kids find it hard.
