The breakfast and dinner was on time and delicious... We even had a bonfire. Our tour guide: Cephas is the best tour guide and driver I've ever meet. He made our safari most memorable. Day by day

Day 1. Drive Nairobi to Samburu country, about 5 to 6 hours.

Day 2. Continue north to Marsabit on the tarmac, about 3.5 hours. Afternoon in Marsabit forest.

Day 3. Cross the Chalbi Desert to Kalacha or North Horr, about 5 hours.

Day 4. Long drive west to Sibiloi and the Alia Bay area, about 6 hours on desert tracks.

Day 5. Visit koobi fora with its research base and small museum. Walk the fossil beds with a guide.

Day 6. See the sibiloi petrified forest, where stone tree trunks lie on the sand. Spend the afternoon on the lake shore.

Day 7. Very long drive back to Marsabit.

Day 8. Drive Marsabit to Nairobi, about 9 hours on good tarmac.

Why is it called the cradle of mankind?

Koobi Fora has produced many important early human fossils and stone tools, which made the area famous worldwide.

Will I see fossils in the ground?

You may see bone fragments on the surface. Nothing may be collected. The museum shows key finds and casts.

How remote is Sibiloi?

Very. There are few visitors, no shops and limited phone signal. Supplies are carried in.

Is wildlife there?

Yes, desert adapted animals such as Grevy's zebra, gerenuk and crocodiles on the lake shore.

When is the best time to go?

June to September is a bit cooler. Rain can close tracks around April and November.

Can I fly in?

Yes. A charter flight to an airstrip in the park saves several driving days but costs much more.
