Day 1. Long drive north via Isiolo and Laisamis to Marsabit, about 8 to 9 hours on tarmac.

Day 2. Morning drive to the crater lake at Gof Sokorte Guda, often visited by buffalo and elephants. Afternoon in the marsabit forest with a ranger.

Day 3. Visit Borana and Rendille areas around town, including a well where herders water camels and cattle. Sunset at a crater viewpoint.

Day 4. Drive back to Nairobi.

What is the crater lake inside the park?

Gof Sokorte Guda is a crater with a lake on its floor, one of the loveliest spots in the north. Animals come down to drink in the mornings.

Are there big elephants?

Marsabit is known for big tusked elephants. Ahmed, a famous bull once protected by presidential decree, lived here.

When is the best season?

June to October and January to March. The mountain can be misty at any time.

Is the road good?

Yes, it is tarmac all the way from Nairobi. It is a long day, so a night in Samburu country can split it.

Can children come?

Older children who cope with long drives.

How does a marsabit safari compare to Samburu?

Samburu has more wildlife and more lodges. Marsabit is cooler, greener and far quieter.
