Day 1. Fly Nairobi to Lodwar. Drive to the lake shore, about 1 hour. Settle in at camp. Sunset over the jade water.

Day 2. Early boat from Ferguson's Gulf to Central Island, about 1 hour depending on the wind. Walk the crater rims to look down on Crocodile Lake and Flamingo Lake.

Day 3. Visit Kalokol fishing villages and a Turkana homestead. Afternoon rest in the shade.

Day 4. Drive to Lodwar and fly back to Nairobi.

How close do I get at Crocodile Lake?

You look down on Crocodile Lake from the crater rim, well above the water. Guides keep the group on safe paths.

When is the best time to go?

June to September and December to February. Afternoon winds are strong all year, so boats go early.

How hot does it get?

Very hot, often above 35 degrees by midday. Walks are planned for early morning.

Is Central Island a World Heritage Site?

Yes, as part of Lake Turkana National Parks with Sibiloi and South Island.

Can children come?

Older children who cope well with heat. The boat ride and crater walks need care.

How does it compare to South Island?

Central Island is easier to reach from Lodwar and has the crater lakes. South Island is larger and reached from Loiyangalani on the east shore.
