Day by day

Day 1. Drive north via Nyahururu to Maralal, about 6 to 7 hours. Night in Maralal.

Day 2. Continue through Baragoi and South Horr to Loiyangalani on the lake shore. A long, rough and beautiful day.

Day 3. Boat out to South Island, about 1 to 2 hours each way depending on the wind. Walk on the volcanic island and look for crocodiles and nesting birds.

Day 4. Visit an El Molo village near Loiyangalani, then drive up to Gatab on Mount Kulal.

Day 5. Guided forest walk on Mount Kulal with views over the lake and the old turkana volcano fields. Second night at Gatab.

Day 6. Drive back south through South Horr and Baragoi to Maralal.

Day 7. Return to Nairobi by evening.

When is the best time to go?

June to September and December to February are popular. The lake gets very windy most afternoons, so boat trips leave early.

What is South Island National Park?

An uninhabited volcanic island in Lake Turkana and part of the Lake Turkana National Parks World Heritage Site. It is known for crocodiles and nesting birds.

How hard is the mount kulal hike?

Moderate. Forest walks around Gatab follow ridges with a few steep bits. A local guide walks with you.

Are the roads safe?

They are rough and remote rather than dangerous. Lujui Kenya Travels checks local security advice before each departure and adjusts the route if needed.

Can children come?

Older children who cope with long drives and heat. Younger kids usually find it too tough.

How does it compare to flying to Turkana?

Flying takes a few hours. Driving takes two long days each way but shows you the whole north.
