Can a hill really look like a warrior taking a nap?

Sleeping Warrior Hill rises above the shore of Lake Elementaita. From the main road its outline looks like a Maasai warrior lying on his back. This elementaita hike with Lujui Kenya Travels climbs the ridge inside Soysambu Conservancy with a local guide.

Morning. Drive from Nairobi through Naivasha to Elementaita, about 2.5 hours. Enter Soysambu Conservancy and meet your guide.

Midday. Hike the ridge of the Sleeping Warrior, about 2 to 3 hours return, with zebra and Rothschild giraffe on the plains below. Picnic lunch with a lake view.

Afternoon. Slow drive along the shore for flamingos and pelicans, then return to Nairobi.

What is Delamere's Nose?

A local nickname for the same hill outline. Some people see a sleeping warrior, others the profile of Lord Delamere, whose family estate became Soysambu.

How hard is the hike?

Easy to moderate. The path is rocky and steep in places but short, about 2 to 3 hours return.

When is the best season?

Any month works. Flamingo numbers rise and fall with water levels, so sightings are never promised.

How far is Elementaita from Nairobi?

About 2.5 hours by road on the Nakuru highway.

Can children come?

Yes, kids who can walk for a couple of hours. Bring sun hats because the ridge has little shade.

Can I add Lake Nakuru?

Yes. Lake Nakuru National Park is about 30 minutes further on. It makes a long day and park fees apply.
