This kipipiri hike takes you up a lone forested peak on the Nyandarua plateau, west of the main Aberdare Range. Lujui Kenya Travels sorts the forest permit, a local guide and the long drive from Nairobi.

Day by day

Morning. Drive via Naivasha and the Kinangop plateau toward Kipipiri, about 3 hours. Meet your guide and walk up through farmland into kipipiri forest.

Midday. Climb through bamboo and montane forest to the summit area, about 4 hours up. Lunch with views back to the Aberdare Range and the Kinangop.

Afternoon. Walk down, about 3 hours, then drive back to Nairobi.

How hard is the Kipipiri hike?

Hard. Expect 6 to 8 hours on foot with steep forest sections and few markers. Good fitness is a must.

When is the best season?

January to March and July to October. In the rains the forest paths turn to deep mud.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Kipipiri is a Kenya Forest Service forest, so a permit is needed. It is arranged and included.

What wildlife might I see?

Mostly birds, monkeys and signs of buffalo. Your guide reads the trail and keeps a safe distance from big animals.

Can children join?

Only strong teenage hikers. The day is long and steep.

How does it compare to an aberdare range hike like Satima?

Satima is higher and sits on open moorland inside the national park. Kipipiri is a forest climb outside the park with fewer people.
