Questions people ask

How hard is the Satima Peak hike?

Moderate to hard. The altitude is high but the climb from the trailhead is gradual. Fit walkers manage it in about 6 to 7 hours return.

When is the best season?

The drier months, roughly January to March and July to October. In the long rains the moorland turns boggy and park roads can close.

Can I swap the summit for a kinangop plateau hike?

Yes. A gentler kinangop plateau hike past farms and forest edges can replace the summit if the weather or your fitness calls for it.

What should I wear?

Layers. It can feel warm in the sun and near freezing in the mist. Pack a waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat and broken in boots.

Can children join?

Teenagers who hike often can. The long drive and the altitude make it a poor fit for small children.

How does it compare to Mount Kenya?

Satima is a one day summit with no night on the mountain. Point Lenana on Mount Kenya takes three to four days and goes higher.
