Is January a good time for a Kenya safari? It is one of the best.
The short rains are over, the grass is fresh and many antelope give birth, which keeps lions and cheetahs busy. Lujui Kenya Travels pairs three days in the Masai Mara with a night at Lake Nakuru for rhinos and flamingos, with a private guide and a 4x4 Land Cruiser the whole way.
Best for
- Families on the school holiday tail end
- Couples who want warm, dry days
- Photographers chasing green plains and young animals
- Travellers who missed the July migration crowds
Day by day
Day 1. Pick up in Nairobi and drive through the Great Rift Valley to the Masai Mara. Afternoon game drive.
Day 2. Full day in the reserve with a packed lunch. January is calving time for many antelope, so predators stay active.
Day 3. Morning and evening game drives, with an optional Maasai village visit at midday.
Day 4. Drive to Lake Nakuru National Park for rhinos, flamingos and tree climbing lions.
Day 5. Morning game drive, then the drive back to Nairobi by late afternoon.

Questions people ask
Is January rainy in Kenya?
January is one of the driest months. Short showers are possible but rarely stop a game drive.
Can we see the migration in January?
The big herds are in Tanzania in January. The Mara still has resident lions, cheetahs, elephants and plenty of plains game.
Are prices lower in January?
Early January is festive season pricing. From mid January many camps drop to shoulder rates, so your quote may come in lower.
Can we add the beach?
Yes. Diani or Watamu fit well after the safari, with a short flight from Nairobi.
