The breakfast and dinner was on time and delicious... We even had a bonfire. Our tour guide: Cephas is the best tour guide and driver I've ever meet. He made our safari most memorable. What happens to an orphaned elephant after the Nairobi nursery?

Many move to the Ithumba Sheldrick reintegration unit in northern Tsavo East, where they slowly return to wild herds. Lujui Kenya Travels plans the route, the camp request and game drives around this remote corner of the park.

Day by day

Day 1. Long drive from Nairobi to northern Tsavo East, about 6 to 7 hours, part of it on rough roads. Evening at camp.

Day 2. Join the orphans at the visiting time set by the Trust, usually around the mud bath. Afternoon game drive, then watch the orphans return to their night stockades.

Day 3. Early game drive and the drive back to Nairobi.

Can anyone visit Ithumba?

Visits are for people who foster an orphan through the Sheldrick Trust and book through the Trust. Foster first, then plan the trip.

Is a stay at Ithumba camp possible?

The camp has very few rooms. A stay is subject to availability, arranged on request.

How remote is it?

Very. The road from Nairobi takes about 6 to 7 hours. A charter flight to the nearby airstrip takes about 1.5 hours.

Will I see wild elephants too?

Yes. Ex orphans and wild herds often come to the water near the unit.

When is the best time?

June to October and January to March. Rain can close tracks in April, May and November.

Can children come?

Yes. Kids love the orphans, but the long drive suits children of about eight and up.
