The breakfast and dinner was on time and delicious... We even had a bonfire. Our tour guide: Cephas is the best tour guide and driver I've ever meet. He made our safari most memorable. Could two lions really stop a railway?

Day by day

Day 1. Drive from Nairobi to Tsavo West via Mtito Andei, about 5 hours. Afternoon at Mzima Springs and the Shetani lava flow.

Day 2. Drive to the Tsavo River area for the tsavo railway history stops near the old bridge site, with the story of the lions and the bridge builders. Continue into Tsavo East for an evening game drive.

Day 3. Morning game drive in Tsavo East to Lugard Falls, then the drive back to Nairobi.

Where are the original lions now?

Their remains are held in a museum in Chicago. The story and the landscape stay in Tsavo.

Why are Tsavo lions maneless?

Many males here have thin or no manes. Heat and thick thorn bush are the most common explanations.

Will I see lions?

Lions live in both parks, but Tsavo is huge and thick in places. Sightings are likely but not guaranteed.

How long are the drives?

About 5 hours from Nairobi to Tsavo West. Parts inside the parks are on dirt roads.

When is the best time?

June to October and January to March are dry, which helps with sightings.

Can I finish at the coast instead?

Yes. From Tsavo East it is about 3 hours to Mombasa, so this links well with a beach stay.
