Day 1. Pickup in Nairobi and drive down the escarpment through Mai Mahiu. Turn off the Narok road onto rough tracks to the conservancy, about 2 to 3 hours in all. Set up camp, then walk the outer rim at sunset.

Day 2. Sunrise over the inner crater and its forested island block. Breakfast, then a guided walk into the lava caves with headlamps. Lunch at camp and drive back to Nairobi by evening.

Is camping Mount Suswa safe for beginners?

Yes. The campsite sits back from the crater edge and community guides stay with the group. Facilities are basic, with long drop toilets and no showers.

How long is the drive from Nairobi?

About 2 to 3 hours. The last part is a rough track that needs a 4x4, especially after rain.

What is inside the lava caves?

Long lava tubes with collapsed roofs, roots hanging from the ceiling and bats. One chamber is known locally as the baboon parliament, where baboons gather at dusk.

How cold does it get at night?

The rim sits well above 2,000 m, so nights feel cold. Bring a warm layer, a beanie and a good sleeping bag.

Can children come along?

Older children who can walk for a few hours do well. The caves are dark with uneven floors, so younger kids need a hand held all the way.

How does it compare to Longonot?

Longonot is a steep day hike inside a national park. The suswa overnight hike is wilder, with fewer people, caves to explore and a night in camp.
