Day 1. Drive via Narok to the Loita Hills, about 6 hours. Short evening walk near camp.

Day 2. Full day walk through open hills and Maasai settlements, about 5 to 6 hours. Night in a new camp.

Day 3. Walk to the edge of the loita forest, sacred to the Maasai, with your guides.

Day 4. Short morning walk, then drive back to Nairobi.

How hard is the loita hills trek?

Moderate. Expect 4 to 6 hours of walking a day on uneven paths at altitude.

Will I see wildlife?

Some, including giraffe, zebra, antelope and many birds. This is a walk through living Maasai land, not a game park.

When is the best season?

June to October and January to February. Rain makes the tracks very muddy.

What is the Loita forest?

Known in Maa as Naimina Enkiyio, the forest of the lost child. It is sacred to the Loita Maasai and visited with respect.

Can children come?

Teenagers who walk well.

How does it compare to a Mara walking safari?

Mara conservancies offer short walks from luxury camps. Loita is a true multi day walk with simpler camps.
