The breakfast and dinner was on time and delicious... We even had a bonfire. Our tour guide: Cephas is the best tour guide and driver I've ever meet. He made our safari most memorable. Day by day

Day 1. Arrival in Nairobi, meet and greet, quiet evening at the hotel.

Day 2. Nairobi National Museum and Bomas of Kenya for traditional dance from many Kenyan communities. Evening talk on Kenya's road to independence.

Day 3. Drive to the Masai Mara, about 5 to 6 hours. Afternoon game drive.

Day 4. Morning game drive, then time in a Maasai village with elders who explain age sets, cattle and family life.

Day 5. Last game drive and the road back to Nairobi.

Day 6. Fly or take the SGR train to Mombasa. Evening walk on the seafront.

Day 7. Fort Jesus and Mombasa Old Town with a local historian. Hear the story of the East African slave trade and the Swahili towns that traded with the Indian Ocean world.

Day 8. Day trip south to the Shimoni slave caves and the fishing village around them, or a quiet beach day.

Day 9. Free morning, then transfer to Moi International Airport for your flight home.

Is this an african heritage travel trip or a safari?

Both. Three days go to the Mara for wildlife. The other days focus on people, places and history in Nairobi and on the coast.

Can I do a roots tour Kenya style DNA search on this trip?

Kenya is not a common ancestral link for most Africans in the Americas, since most were taken from West and Central Africa. This trip focuses on shared African history and the East African slave trade on the coast.

When is the best time to go?

June to October and December to February are dry and easy for road travel. The Mara is busiest from July to October.

How long are the drives?

Nairobi to the Mara takes about 5 to 6 hours. Mombasa to Shimoni takes about 2 hours each way.

Is the Maasai village visit respectful?

Yes. The visit is arranged with the community and the fee goes to them. Ask before taking photos of people.

Can a church or reunion group book this?

Yes. Groups of 10 or more get their own dates and can add a service at a local church on the Sunday.
