Morning. Drive out of Nyahururu toward Ol Joro Orok, about 40 minutes. Walk the lake edge with your bird guide, looking for grey crowned cranes, herons and hippos in the reeds.

Midday. Packed lunch by the shore, then a slow drive across the plateau past Ndaragwa farms.

Afternoon. Stop at Thomson's Falls in Nyahururu town and walk down to the base if you like. Drop off at your hotel.

Grey crowned cranes are the stars. Expect herons, ducks, plovers and raptors too, plus hippos in the deeper water.

Can I combine birding Nyahururu wetlands with the falls?

Yes. The lake and Thomson's Falls sit about 40 minutes apart, so birding Nyahururu wetlands and the falls fit one relaxed day.

When is the best season?

Birds are there all year. Wetter months bring more water and more ducks, while drier months make the shore walks easier.

How far is it from Nairobi?

Nyahururu is about 3 to 4 hours by road. A Nairobi start is possible, but it turns into a very long day.
