Day 1. Board the dhow in Lamu after breakfast. Sail past Shela to the reefs at Manda Toto for snorkelling. Camp on a quiet beach.

Day 2. Sail north to Pate Island. Walk through a fishing village and see old Swahili ruins. Swim and camp for the night.

Day 3. Morning swim, then sail back to Lamu by mid afternoon.

Does the dhow have a toilet?

Most traditional dhows do not. Stops on the islands are planned through the day.

What if the wind drops?

Many dhows carry a small engine. The route may change with the wind and tide, which is part of the fun.

Is the camping comfortable?

It is simple. You get a tent, mattress and bedding on the beach. Bring a head torch.

When is the best time to sail?

December to March has steady winds and calm seas. June to August is rougher.
