Day by day

Day 1. Drive about four to five hours from Nairobi to Amboseli. Afternoon game drive along the swamps where elephants come to drink.

Day 2. Sunrise drive for the clearest mountain views. Climb Observation Hill for a view across the swamps. Afternoon drive for lions and hyenas.

Day 3. Leave Amboseli through Kimana and drive about three hours to Tsavo West past the Chyulu Hills. Afternoon walk at Mzima Springs to watch hippos through the underwater hide.

Day 4. Full day in Tsavo West. See the Shetani lava flow and Chaimu crater, then look for black rhino around the Ngulia sanctuary fence.

Day 5. Morning drive, then about five to six hours back to Nairobi.

When is the best Kilimanjaro view Kenya can offer?

Early morning before 9am. June to October and January to February bring the clearest skies. Cloud often covers the peak by midday.

What should I pack?

A warm layer for dawn drives, a long lens if you shoot, dust cover for your camera and comfortable shoes for Mzima Springs.

Are park fees included?

How far is Amboseli from Nairobi?

About 240 km, or four to five hours by road. Tsavo West to Nairobi is about five to six hours.

Is this better than a plain Amboseli Kilimanjaro tour?

Two nights in Amboseli give you two dawns for the mountain. Adding Tsavo West brings lava landscapes and rhino chances that Amboseli alone does not.
