Day by day

Day 1. Arrive at JKIA and rest in Nairobi.

Day 2. Fly to the Mara. Afternoon game drive.

Day 3. Full day in the Mara with a picnic lunch.

Day 4. Sunrise drive, optional balloon, sundowner.

Day 5. Fly to Nairobi and on to Kigali, about one and a half hours. Afternoon at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Day 6. Drive about two and a half hours to Musanze. Afternoon village visit.

Day 7. Gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park. One hour with the family once found.

Day 8. Golden monkey trek or a rest day by the lodge.

When is the best season for Mara and Volcanoes?

June to September and December to February. Rwanda's long rains in March to May make trails muddy.

What should I pack?

Waterproof boots, gloves, rain jacket, long trousers and layers for chilly Mara mornings.

Are fees included?

Yes. The gorilla permit and Mara fees are included. Golden monkey permits are extra.

How far is Volcanoes from Kigali?

About two and a half hours by road.

Is there an age limit?

Gorilla trekking needs a minimum age of 15.

How does this compare with a Kenya and Uganda trip?

Rwanda is quicker to reach and the roads are smooth. The permit costs more than Uganda's.
