Day 1. Morning visit to the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi so the kids can feed a giraffe. Drive about two hours to Lake Naivasha. Afternoon boat ride to see hippos and fish eagles.

Day 2. Drive about five hours to the Masai Mara with a stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint. Lunch at camp, then a short evening game drive.

Day 3. Morning game drive for lions and elephants. Back to camp for lunch and the pool. Late afternoon drive when the cats wake up.

Day 4. Sunrise drive, then a visit to a Maasai village where children join the welcome dance. Afternoon at leisure or one more drive.

Day 5. Breakfast and the drive back to Nairobi, arriving mid afternoon.

When is the best time for a family safari in Kenya?

School holidays in July and August match the migration in the Mara. December and the long rains months are quieter and cheaper.

What should the children pack?

Layers for cold early drives, a sun hat, sunscreen, small binoculars and a book or game for the drive.

How long are the drives?

Nairobi to Naivasha is about two hours. Naivasha to the Mara is about five hours with stops. The longest day is the drive home.
