Day 1. Drive north past Mount Kenya to Samburu, about 6 hours. Evening game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Day 2. Full day in Samburu for the Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and beisa oryx.

Day 3. Drive south to Lake Nakuru. Evening drive for rhinos.

Day 4. Morning in Lake Nakuru, then on to the Masai Mara.

Day 5. Full day in the Mara with a bush picnic.

Day 6. Morning drive and an optional Maasai village visit.

Day 7. Breakfast and drive back to Nairobi.

Why add Samburu?

It has dry country species that do not live in the Mara. It also feels quieter.

How hot is Samburu?

Days are hot and dry. Lodges have pools and drives run early and late.

Is the Nakuru to Mara drive long?

About 5 to 6 hours with stops. You can fly instead from Nairobi if you prefer.

When is the best time?

June to October and December to March. Both are dry and good for game.
