Day by day

Day 1. Drive from Nairobi to Laikipia, about 4 hours. Evening sky talk with a guide and a laser pointer tour of the constellations.

Day 2. Game drive in the conservancy. After dinner, move to a raised star bed platform for the night.

Day 3. Drive to Samburu National Reserve, about 2 to 3 hours. Afternoon game drive for Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk. Dark sky kenya viewing after dinner.

Day 4. Sunrise game drive, then the road back to Nairobi, about 6 hours.

When is the best season for an astronomy safari?

The dry months, June to October and January to February, give the clearest skies. Book near a new moon for the darkest nights.

What should I pack?

A warm fleece and hat for the star bed, a red light headtorch, a camera tripod and insect repellent.

Are park fees included?

Yes. Samburu reserve fees and Laikipia conservancy fees are in the price.

How long are the drives?

Nairobi to Laikipia is about 4 hours, Laikipia to Samburu about 2 to 3 hours and Samburu back to Nairobi about 6 hours.

Are star beds kenya safe for children?

Yes. Platforms have rails and mosquito nets. A guard stays on watch. Children aged 6 and over are welcome.

How does this compare to a Masai Mara safari?

The Mara has more cats. Laikipia and Samburu have darker skies, fewer vehicles and species you will not see in the Mara.
