When does a private plane cost less than seats?

Take 8 guests on a scheduled flight at about USD 250 each way. That is about USD 2,000 one way, close to the USD 2,100 for a whole private plane. With 8 or more people, your own plane often costs the same and flies when you want.

Where the flights land

The Mara has several airstrips, including Keekorok, Olkiombo, Musiara, Ol Seki and the private conservancy strips. Your camp tells you which one is closest. Jets cannot land on these gravel strips, so private flights use turboprops such as the Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC 12.

Leaving from Nairobi

Most Mara flights leave from Wilson Airport, about 15 minutes from the city centre outside rush hour. Some charters can leave from JKIA if you are connecting from an international flight.

Luggage

Scheduled flights usually allow about 15 kg per person in soft bags. A private plane gives you more room, so check the limit with your quote.

Best time to fly in

July to October brings the wildebeest migration and the busiest skies, so book early. January to March is quieter, with fewer vehicles at sightings.
